Colonization Procedure

"Virgin Planet."

The biochemistry of an Earthlike planet is likely to be lethal.

Therefore, any prospective colony planet is thoroughly surveyed.

Then, an all-male group lands and spends two or three years building, analyzing and testing.

Then, women come.

In one case, however, a trepidation vortex threw the women's transport hundreds of light-years off-course and also ruined its hyperdrive. Despite all this, the women managed to colonize the Earthlike moon, Atlantis, whose biochemistry is compatible. Atlantean life forms include fish, reptiles and birds although not mammals. The women reproduce by parthenogenesis.

It is highly improbable that the chance event of a trepidation vortex would throw the women's ship to a point in space where they would be able to land on a planet with such a hospitable environment.

Kaor, Paul!

Yes, but sometimes even highly unlikely things do happen. And for telling a story it was legitimate of Anderson to assume that for writing VIRGIN PLANET.

Ad astra! Sean
