On the island of Lysum, there is:
"...delicately sculptured wood..." (p. 81);
"...subtly designed decoration..." (ibid.);
"...intricate figure dancing..." (ibid.);
and excellent choral music.
Davis Bertram reflects that Valeria Whitley's:
"...rather repulsive virtues, hardihood and fearlessness, would be as redundant here as fangs on a turtle." (ibid.)
Valeria derides arts, poetry, craft and music which are full time occupations on Lysum where there is easy access to fish, fowl, fruits and metal. But access to all of that is what all the fighting is about elsewhere on Atlantis.
The optimal Atlantean would enjoy planetary bounty but would also be capable of hardihood and fearlessness if necessary but how can such a combination of virtues be maintained? Early training in a preserved wilderness area?

Kaor, Paul!
And long peace and ease can and has made people forget fearlessness and hardihood. It often takes hard experience and losses/defeats to relearn them.
Ad astra! Sean
