"Space Cadet" Novels (So To Say) And Spies

Robert Heinlein
Space Cadet (part of the Juvenile Future History)
Starship Troopers

James Blish
The Star Dwellers (part of the Haertel Scholium)
Mission To The Heart Stars (sequel)

Poul Anderson
Young Flandry Trilogy (part of the Flandry series and the Technic History)

The difference, of course, is that Flandry ages, matures, becomes an Admiral and goes way beyond "cadet" status. But his introductory trilogy strongly parallels these juvenile novels by Heinlein and Blish.

Blish has two (what I call) "space secret service stories":

The Quincunx of Time (Haertel Scholium)
"A Style in Treason" (linked to Quincunx by a Dirac message)

- which are like Anderson's Captain Flandry series. In every category, Anderson wrote more.

Kaor, Paul!

Even better, perhaps, would have been Anderson giving us a story showing Dominic Flandry while a cadet at the Intelligence Academy after ENSIGN FLANDRY. Focusing on gaining the knowledge and skills specifically needed by Intelligence officers. The Imperial Flight Academy would have drilled into him how to handle planes and spaceships and other military skills.

Ad astra! Sean
