Aliens Mentioned In ENSIGN FLANDRY

Ensign Flandry.

Merseians
The collective villain in the Flandry series and in this novel.

If we have read the Technic History in the original publication order of its multiple instalments, then we first encountered Merseians in "Honorable Enemies." (1951)

If we have read the collections and novels of the Technic History in their publication order, then we first encountered Merseians in Mirkheim. (1977)

If we have read The Technic Civilization Saga, which presents the series in chronological order of fictional events, then we first encountered Merseians in "Day of Burning." (1967)

Ensign Flandry (1966) presents, for the first time, two Merseians as viewpoint characters.

Starkadians
This novel presents, for the first time, both land and sea Starkadians. The land dwellers, Tigeries, return in The Game of Empire (1985) where the sea dwellers also still exist but remain off-stage.

Ymirites
Haukberg's yacht passes close to an Ymirite spaceship. Ymirites breathe hydrogen and have little contact with oxygen-breathers. Flandry will encounter them in "Hunters of the Sky Cave." (1959)

Betelgeuseans
Flandry tells Persis that the Betelgeuseans are fascinating. He will encounter them, along with Merseians and a Chereionite, in "Honorable Enemies."

Irumclagians
Flandry and Persis encounter Irumclagians. Flandry will be stationed on Irumclaw, and will visit Talwin which, like Starkad, has two intelligent species, in A Circus of Hells. (1970)

Kaor, Paul!

I have commented before on how difficult it would be for water breathing intelligent races to get into space. The Sea People of Starkad would have to learn how to build massively strong ships capable of carrying the water used as "atmosphere" and the technology needed to keep it breathable. AND the hyperdrive would need to be protected from that water.

Ad astra! Sean
