Satan's World, XVIII.
Van Rijn is concerned that Falkayn and Chee Lan have not returned from Beta Crucis but does not send reinforcements because they are experienced enough to cope while, on the other hand, if they have been harmed, then any reinforcements would arrive too late. Again, he does not send any assistance against hostile forces because too little assistance would do no good - indeed would be counterproductive because the assisting craft would be lost - whereas the League cannot spare enough warcraft to ensure victory. It is when he adds that that victory would be against:
"'...these unknown villains trying to horn us out of our hard-begotten profit.'" (p. 518)
- that Adzel accuses him of valuing profit above everything else. However, a close study of van Rijn's reasoning shows that he addresses every angle - including profit.

Kaor, Paul!
And that is what a truly COMPETENT leader does, assessing every angle. Not just one or two, as most of us probably would have done.
Ad astra! Sean
