there have been large radio bursts which might be caused by collisions between mutually orbiting neutron stars although that would destroy both stars whereas one of the bursts stopped, then restarted;
one star has large, non-spherical objects regularly passing in front of it;
the search for radio messages is (maybe) being stepped up;
there is no evidence of waste-heat from high technology anywhere else in the galaxy.
This updates data needed for a certain kind of speculative fiction, e.g.:
A For Andromeda by Fred Hoyle and John Elliot;
Contact by Carl Sagan;
Starfarers by Poul Anderson.

Kaor, Paul!
But the recent reports and release of data about UFOs by the US Gov't could lead to evidence that non humans using high tech does exist! We do now have fairly convincing evidence something strange is going on, of UFOs flying in ways far beyond the technology we have reached.
Maybe SF writers should take a closer look at UFOs and their implications if they are shown to be real? Or speculatively treated as real. I thought of two stories by Anderson touching on this: "Peek! I See You!" and "When Half Gods Go" (1953).

Sean,
We just don't know what UFOs are yet. They remain U.
In Loch Ness, certain observed phenomena, like a large object just under the surface moving against the current, are now being explained without reference to a large aquatic animal.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
UFOs remains UNIDENTIFIED, I agree. But the reports reluctantly released by the US gov't in recent months includes testimony by persons I consider extremely reliable stating UFOs they had observed were using technology we do not have. Which makes me WONDER what is going on!
I'm more agnostic about the alleged Loch Ness monster. SOMETHING very interesting may be there!

Sean,
The UFOs looked as if they were vehicles using advanced technology but where do they come from and disappear to? Why are they not seem all the time? Why do they allow themselves to be seen - if that is what is happening? Why do they not make contact? All that we can say is that this, like a lot of things, needs further investigation.
An unexpected giant eel has been filmed in Loch Ness. There are interesting natural phenomena, only recently understood, that create the appearance of something large moving about on or under the surface.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Exactly, what you said about UFOs! One problem is that many people still don't want to take UFOs seriously, because they are afraid of looking crazy. Or because they don't want to be forced to change their minds.
Maybe a giant eel was the Loch Ness monster? And something large SEEMS to be moving about Loch Ness? Will we ever know for sure what is going ON there?

Sean,
The eel can explain some sightings but not the image of a Plesiosaur-like "monster."
The seeming movements are being explained. Underwater turbulence can move objects like logs against the current visible on the surface. A fast boat that is now out of sight can leave behind it a large wake that persists and resembles a moving object.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
SOMETHING odd seems to be in Loch Ness. Noted, what you said about "moving objects." Tho I have my doubts about wakes lasting that long
And "wake" is yet another word in English with the same sound and spelling having multiple meanings!
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
But the moving objects are things like logs and uprooted trees that are being made, by underwater turbulence, to move against the surface current and which are therefore mistaken for living creatures.
Wakes from fast, powerful vessels do last for a long time. This has recently been researched and verified.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Noted, what you said about wakes, in the nautical sense. I guess the Loch Ness mystery is partially solved!
But UFOs interest me, esp. in light of the recent admissions by the US Gov't.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
UFOs are one big unsolved mystery but I suppose that there will always be mysteries, phenomena not as yet understood, at the borderline between the known and the unknown. Mysteries have to be recognized as such, not explained away.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Amen! And I've been thinking of getting a copy of that UFO report pub. by the gov't.
Ad astra! Sean
