An 18 Volume Technic History

OK. Here is the minimalist way to make the original version of the Technic History complete. In that version, The Earth Book Of Stormgate is preceded by four volumes about the Polesotechnic League and one about the Terran Imperial War on Avalon.The Earth Book synthesizes the histories of the Grand Survey, the League and Avalon but omits:

early interplanetary exploration ("The Saturn Game");

the Time of Troubles between League and Empire ("The Star Plunderer");

the earlier Empire ("Sargasso of Lost Starships").

Therefore, these three stories could be collected in one more volume to be read after the Earth Book. This would complete the History before the introduction of Dominic Flandry in the later Empire. It would also involve removing "The Star Plunderer" from The Long Night and, at the same time, it would make sense to move "Outpost of Empire" from The Long Night to (the same volume as) The Day Of Their Return.

Thus, the Technic History would finally be complete in no less than eighteen volumes.

Kaor, Paul!

I am interested by these discussions of how best to arrange the Technic stories and novels. But one point I find curiously overlooked by you is what to do about the ORIGINAL texts of the Technic stories Anderson thought it desirable to revise. See my comment in a prior recent combox that these original texts could be collected into an appendix of my proposed THE POST-IMPERIAL ERA.

Sean,
I think a separate volume. The completed History should be a work unto itself.

We have to place the original texts of the Technic stories revised by Anderson somewhere. Since I don't think the four post-Imperial stories would make a very large volume, I would include these original texts with it as an appendix.
