A future history is more than a series with interchangeable installments so how far does Poul Anderson's Technic History progress in The Technic Civilization Saga, Volume II, David Falkayn: Star Trader? Nicholas van Rijn and his colleagues are alive at the beginning and the end of this volume. Therefore, Vol II does not in itself constitute a future history. However, there are several historical turning points:
van Rijn resolves the conflict on t'Kela;
van Rijn appoints David Falkayn to lead his first trade pioneer crew;
that crew completes missions on Ikrananka and Merseia;
van Rijn solves the problem on Cain while lounging in his penthouse apartment on the roof of the Winged Cross in Chicago Integrate;
van Rijn and Falkayn's crew counteract an external threat to Technic civilization which meanwhile internally deteriorates;
Falkayn's crew takes secret action to address the internal problems of the Polesotechnic League and risks a major conflict with van Rijn.
The seeds of the further future are here:
there will be civil war in the League;
Falkayn will leave human space;
Merseia will become a threat...

Kaor, Paul!
Aha! "Day of Burning" is an ESPECIALLY crucial story in the Technic series. It was certainly not David Falkayn's or the League's intention, but their roles in the saving of Merseia from the effects of that nearby supernova would lead to the rise of Merseia as the deadly enemy of Technic civilization and the Empire. But of course I know it was impossible for Falkayn to have known that.
