During the battle at the red sun:
"The old stars enclose everything in radiance. The Milky Way glows phantom-bright. Nebulae and sister galaxies glimmer mysterious. Glimpses go by, ships hurtling, graceful as dancers."
-Poul Anderson, The Game Of Empire IN Anderson, Flandry's Legacy (Riverdale, NY, 2012), pp. 189-453 AT CHAPTER EIGHT, p. 282.
The Milky Way again although, to illustrate the post, I found an image of a nebula. The contrast between the transient conflicts of conscious beings and the transcendent grandeur of the unconscious cosmos is a major sub-text.

Kaor, Paul!
And I've also seen mention of how the stars themselves had their own Long Night waiting for them.
