Fanatics

Is this quote valid? Poul Anderson's heroes redouble their efforts against the odds when necessary but also never lose sight of their purpose so they are not fanatics by this criterion.

Which of his characters are fanatics? Benoni Strang, definitely. Aycharaych, maybe. Merseians single-minded about racial hegemony, maybe. But none of these guys loses sight of his purpose either.

What Anderson says about fanatics sounds right but I would be interested to read some examples to bear it out.

My favorite definition of fanatic was "someone who not only wants to talk about only one thing, but tries to make everyone else talk about it too".

This blog is not fanatical! (Although it may be FANatical.) Although we discuss Poul Anderson, we can say whatever we want about him and we discuss everything else anyway!

Well, the blog isn't the whole of your life!

Kaor, Paul

I recall, in e one of his stories, Poul Anderson describing how one character's face "hardening into embodied purpose." That is, becoming fanatical. Unfortunately, I don't recall which story that was in.
