Poul Anderson, Three Hearts And Three Lions (London, 1977), Chapter Fifteen, p. 97.
Holger remembers:
a glass cliff beneath a green malachite balustrade set with silver figures and rubies that glow crimson in the sunset;
grottos breaking light into rainbow shards, red, gold and violet;
snow white foam on a purple sea as Avalon floats across the ocean in a magic haze.
I thought that that scene deserved to be summarized and recorded.

Kaor, Paul!
And if I remember rightly, Holger left Avalon against the wishes of Morgan le Fay because France/the Empire had come under attack and he wanted to help in driving back the invaders (Muslim Moors from Spain, I think).
