Chapter XXVII begins:
"A man hight Tosti. He it was who broke the long peace." (p. 232)
- and ends:
"But Tosti had gotten away." (p. 245)
Chapter XXIX begins:
"It seemed as though Tosti the Wicked was done for." (p. 251)
- and ends with Hadding killing Tosti, then asking the gods what they want of him.
After his first clash with Tosti, Hadding demonstrates for the third time his remarkable ability to escape and survive, alone if necessary, after a military defeat.
We have read of Hadding's marriage to Ragnhild, then of his conflict with Tosti. What do the remaining six chapters hold?
