The Special-X reminded me of altered human beings/metamorphs in Harvest The Fire. Like the Special-X, Hench was genetically engineered for a specific purpose that no longer exists. He is a large-headed Intellect cleverer than Leonardo or Einstein but has been made redundant by more powerful computers which in turn have been superseded by sophotects, conscious AIs.
Hench plays four-dimensional chess against a computer that would beat him quickly if it were not set at his level. Alienated from civilization, he is easily persuaded to help a Lunarian conspiracy by breaking "...the cybernetic security system." (p. 105)

I did find the altered humans/metamorphs of the HARVEST books something of a strain to accept. Esp. the idea of altering animals to human levels of intelligence.
