Nanotech

- my only point here being that, late in their careers, sf writers of Poul Anderson's generation had to acknowledge nanotechnology. It is probably mentioned in Harvest Of Stars although no references hit me in the face when I looked for them just now. Several of Anderson's later novels share some common features that come cross as more plausible extrapolations than the earlier hyperspace and many aliens stuff. For Love And Glory is an exception. He could also return to earlier series with their already established premises, i.e., there were late addition to the Time Patrol and the Technic History. Old and new combined.

Starfarers and Seladorians

In Poul Anderson's Starfarers, the spaceship Envoy leaves the Solar System at an unspecified date in our future and returns eleven millennia later. The surviving crew members have aged mere months in transit and only a few years at their destination.

Earth has been peacefully united by the philosophy of Selador for three thousand years. As in Anderson's The Boat Of A Million Years, robotics and nanotechnology have made all necessities and many or all comforts:

"...free, like air and sunshine. There was presumably some way to control their distribution and maintain a stable population, but whatever coercion this required was not obvious." (1)

But why control distribution of something as free as air and sunlight? Why should coercion be necessary? If some can perceive a necessity and try to coerce others, then why instead cannot all agree on the necessity? Indeed, a starfarer speculates:

"Probably social pressure does most of the work...The great majority like things as they are." (1)

Interstellar exploration has stopped because the distances to new systems have become too great at sub-light speeds. Interstellar trade has almost stopped because extrasolar colonies have become self-sufficient. Terrestrial science has ceased to be an enquiry and become a body of knowledge. Artistic creativity has ceased.

"Most effort went into exploring and re-enacting the accumulated works of the ages. No one lifetime sufficed to exhaust that heritage." (2)

Anderson and his starfarers (I think) see free necessities, cessation of exploration and trade and scientific and artistic stagnation as forming a pattern but I suggest that it would not have to be like that. If Earth is at the centre of a sphere of interstellar colonisation several light centuries across, then I can understand that few terrestrials would want to embark on exploratory trips beyond known space but this would not prevent them from engaging in scientific enquiry and artistic creation within the Solar System, which still involves observing the universe beyond the System, and some of the colonists at the frontier could certainly retain an interest in exploring further and thus founding new colonies with which it would be profitable to trade.

Previous speculations on equal distribution of abundant wealth have presupposed a human population actively engaged in using modern industry to produce that wealth. If instead we imagine nanotechnology producing everything, then we also imagine an entire population freed to engage either in re-enactment of the past or in new discoveries and, given human diversity, some would do both. They would certainly have the means to do both.

A terrestrial tells a starfarer:

"We of Earth today seek what we may find in ourselves...You seek elsewhere, outward." (2)

But this seems rather a simple dichotomy. Nothing in their circumstances is preventing terrestrials from looking outwards and they can certainly explore the external universe even if not many of them want to make ten or eleven thousand year round trips in the process.

(Anderson elsewhere imagines not only nanotech producing everything but also AI superceding humanity but that does not happen in Starfarers.)

Growing Buildings And Integrating With Nature

Can anyone recognize the cover or covers on the top row, left and right - if they are images from a cover?

In FLAG IV, I summarized a lot of information about the Freydisan environment, including Lissa's hopes for the Susaian colony on that planet. However, I did not sufficiently highlight these plans:

"'...microbes that extract and refine minerals, buildings that grow out of the soil...'" (XXXVII, p. 215)

Such nanotechnology, technological manipulation of atoms and molecules, is mentioned in this novel and also in Poul Anderson's Harvest Of Stars Tetralogy. What are the longer term implications of nanotech?  A new phase of existence? The end of want and conflict? An "intelligent" environment addressing every need, transmuting waste into oxygen, growing on trees (if we wanted it) fully nutritional food that looked and tasted like cream cakes? Etc? 

"'...a civilization not opposed to nature, but integrated with it, both in and of it. Something altogether new. No telling how it will develop, what shapes it will take, what the rest of the galaxy might learn from it.'" (ibid.)

Like the Alori in the Psychotechnic History or the Freeholders in the Technic History?

Return II

Starfarers, 48-49.

Envoy communicates audiovisually with Earth. A scholar interprets for an enthroned woman, the Unifier Areli, who "'...bids peace...'" (48, p. 447) She is not mentioned again. (She is mentioned again but not much.)

"It was clear that robotics and nanotechnology had made all necessities, services as well as goods, and perhaps all comforts too, free, like air and sunshine. There was presumably some way to control their distribution and maintain a stable population, but whatever coercion this required was not obvious." (49, p. 450)

There is no need either to control the distribution of air and sunshine or to coerce an affluent and informed population to practice birth control. Poul Anderson imagines an advanced civilization but either he or his characters have difficulty in accepting its implications.

Kith visits are rare and unimportant and the scant interplanetary traffic is entirely robotic. Kith no longer live on Earth. The Envoy crew remain starfolk and cannot settle on Earth.

Postcapitalism?

"...the status and encouragement of private ventures in a postcapitalist economy..." (Harvest The Fire, p. 75)

A contradiction? Maybe not. We know nothing about postcapitalism. Nineteenth century theoreticians assumed that collective labor would continue to be necessary to generate social wealth. Anderson instead imagines universal automation and nanotechnology controlled by self-evolving artificial intelligences. In the latter situation, I think that:

every human being being should have a substantial share in social wealth;

groups should have the resources for any ventures that they envisage;

but no group would be able to employ members of a work-force economically dependent on being employed.

It is this third point that differentiates postcapitalism and that is hardest to imagine. A character in Anderson's Starfarers says that he has the right to make money and to invest it, i.e., in the labor of others. Of course he does, provided that he is operating in an economy that is organized on that basis in the first place.

"Passage [to the Moon] would consume most of his small savings, and the cost of living would be higher; if he didn't want to exist in poverty, he'd need work, pay, to supplement his citizen's credit." (p. 88)

An economy in which someone who overspends his citizen's credit must choose between poverty and employment is still not postcapitalist.

Demetrian Economics And Ecology

In Poul Anderson's Harvest Of Stars (New York, 1993):

"A phone chimed. Every room had one; the colony was glutted with nanotech and assembly-complex wares, including robot workers. Kyra sometimes wondered if any commercial enterprise would evolve on Demeter." (p. 437)

Commerce might or might not evolve although it seems that there is no need for it. The founder of the Demetrian colony, Anson Guthrie, was born in 1970 (so he is 42 as I write), an era when he was able to express himself freely as an individual by becoming an entrepreneur and founding what eventually became an interplanetary company, Fireball.

Later, not the biological Guthrie but his personality downloaded into an artificial neural network controlling a succession of robot bodies is no less a free individual as it cooperates with hundreds of human colonists to terraform the extrasolar planet Demeter. Helped in this planetary enterprise by nanotech and robots, they need not revive commerce in order to produce and exchange, eg, buildings, furniture or telephones.

Accepting such artifacts as given, they can instead operate not economically but ecologically. The equivalent of a planetary nervous system emerges when chemically, electronically, photonically and mechanically interconnected symbiotic molecular structures with self-revising programs directed by a central artificial intelligence have had time to grow within exogenetically born organisms that had been transported across space as frozen seeds or genome maps, then seeded in soil ground from Demetrian rocks by nanotechnology.

Surviving The End Of The Universe

Isaac Asimov's giant Multivac, written in 1956 and set in 2061, seems incredibly primitive in 2017. At the end of Asimov's "The Last Question," the ultimate cosmic AI, located entirely in hyperspace - that needs some explanation -, survives the universe, learns how to reverse entropy and says, "'LET THERE BE LIGHT!'" The Conflict On Harbor

Starfarers, 49.

Of course it should be possible both to deploy Envoy's innovative capabilities beneficially on Harbor and also to use those same capabilities to expand mankind's role in the universe. However, the Venture League's opponents believe that a serious revival of starfaring is an impossible, insane goal and they therefore resist what they see as the wasting of any resources in such activity. These opponents are well-resourced and influential, able to undercut League businesses, pressurize financiers and publish disparaging propaganda, even subsidizing Seladorian missionaries.

Is it these same opponents that block the full application of Terrestrial nanotechnology and robotics on Harbor? Such an application of technology would end poverty and transform society but would also disempower precisely those groups that currently control funds and resources and use them to divert production and distribution into directions profitable for themselves. When necessities and more than necessities have become as free as air, then no one will any longer either sell goods and services or profit by selling them. Life will be lived on an entirely different and inherently freer basis.

Early Extrasolar Colonization II

Surely an easy means of faster than light interstellar travel is a pipe dream - unless I am about to be proved wrong by a laboratory experiment tomorrow or the day after? However, if we assume this common sf premise, further questions arise:

How many inhabitable uninhabited planets are there to colonize?

How easy would it be to transport not only people but also industrial capacity across interstellar distances?

Many planets are being detected and, in more recent sf, nanotechnology helps with the second question. Contrast Poul Anderson's Harvest Of Stars with his earlier future histories. For three planets in the Technic History, see here.

I am trying to find a remembered passage in the Psychotechnic History that compares cultural differentiation, and maybe mutual incomprehensibility, between extrasolar colonies with similar processes in earlier Terrestrial history. I thought that this passage was in The Peregrine/Star Ways but so far have not found it there. Any suggestions?

Three Thousand Years Of Peace

Poul Anderson, Starfarers (New York, 1999).

Nansen's Terrestrial hostess says that the planet has had "'Three thousand years of peace.'" (p. 459)

Nansen replies, "'Thanks to...Selador.'" (ibid.)

- and thinks: Who seems to have done better than the Christ they seem to have forgotten. (ibid.)

Selador has not done better than Christ. Nanotechnology has abolished want and therefore also conflict for material resources. Result: peace. Selador happens to be the religious founder whose name is still quoted.

Zeyd witnesses a ritual in a clearing in a rain forest:

"'In the name of Selador...oneness.'" (pp. 460-461)

Oneness, yes. "In the name of..." is a formula in which any name could have filled in the blank. I hardly need list some of the obvious alternatives. The voices grow shrill as the congregation chants, "'...bring down the falsehoods of the Biosophists...'" (p. 461) I think that that is unlikely. A philosophy that has been global for three millennia will not still chant the names of its defeated opponents. The Anglican Communion does not ritually denounce the falsehoods of the Mithraists or the Manichaeans.

On the other hand, if such conflicts really are still so close to the surface, then Zeyd was right when he "...wondered how serene Earth really was and how long its peace could endure." (ibid.)

Today, I have done other reading and this evening have attended our small sf group. Nevertheless, when I return home and read a few pages of Anderson, I find plenty to post about so it seems that there will a few more posts this month. Anderson always addresses key questions like:

What do people believe?
How does it affect their behavior?
How is society held together?
How long can stability - or apparent stability - last?
How do people respond to change, especially if it has long been delayed?
What should the minority who value change do in any situation? (The situations change with history.)

What Will Happen?

"What will happen to the job market once artificial intelligence outperforms humans in most cognitive tasks? What will be the political impact of a massively new class of economically useless people? What will happen to relationships, families and pension funds when nanotechnology and regenerative medicine turn eighty into the new fifty? Four weighty questions. Four more: Is artificial intelligence imminent? Are economically useless people useless? Have family structures not already changed throughout history? Will the production of unprecedented wealth not enable society to eliminate the gap between rich and poor?

More importantly for this blog, Poul Anderson addressed precisely these questions in many works from the Psychotechnic History to The Boat Of A Million Years. Read them. You already did? They bear a lot of rereading.

The Stars Are Also Fire II

In Poul Anderson's Harvest Of Stars, the central characters spend a lot of time on the run from agents of an overtly oppressive human tyranny. In the sequel, The Stars Are Also Fire, their successors spend a lot of time on the run from agents of a subtly oppressive transhuman cybercosm exercising the same kind of global control as the positronic Brains at the end of Isaac Asimov's I, Robot. Despite this conventional thriller fiction, both novels end by anticipating cosmic and even transcosmic apotheoses.

Is the conflict at the end of the second novel credible? Free human beings and downloaded human intelligences will use nanotechnology to fill the stellar universe with organic life that is expected to end when the last star does whereas inorganic intelligence will survive the universe either by utilising the energy of disintegrating black holes and particles or by experiencing an infinitiy of events and thoughts in the finite time before a cosmic singularity.

Why should both not happen? The cybercosm judges that a cosmos full of organic life will be unpredictable and thus might jeopardise intelligence's chance to survive so that the two destinies are incompatible. Are they? Can't inorganic intelligence cooperate with and take its chances with organic life? Can it not accept uncertainty while striving towards its goal? Should it not see the suppression of scientific data as an unacceptable means to an end just as it no longer uses physical coercion? This issue is the ultimate expression in Anderson's works of the basic conflict that he sees between freedom and control but I wonder if it is rather contrived in this case?

Thulean Economics

In the concluding section of Poul Anderson's The Boat Of A Million Years, "Thule":

(i) AI-controlled nanotechnology makes all goods and machine services as abundant as air.

(ii) Thus, no human beings either produce for profit or work to survive.

(iii) There are no governments, wars or motives for crimes like theft or embezzlement.

(iv) Everyone who wants it has an indefinitely extended lifespan and there is a centuries long waiting list to have children.

(v) Everyone receives a "share" in the common wealth.

(vi) Share is the easiest way to coordinate what people do and to allocate limited resources like land.

(vii) Anyone can save from share and produce goods to sell but there are limited possibilities.

(viii) If naturally grown food became popular, then nanotech would exactly duplicate and undersell it.

(ix) People with indefinitely extended life spans lose interest in collecting authenticated hand made goods that can be exactly duplicated especially since computers continually create new art forms.

(x) The ruling intellects of the world, whether human, electronic or linked (Engineer, Psychologist, Economist, Artist, Astronomer, Sociologist, Administrator), must decide whether to grant a request to resource a human-crewed interstellar spaceship when public opinion favours projects closer to home and when robotic interstellar craft transmit more data than can be assimilated.

THE THREE PHASES OF POUL ANDERSON'S CAREER, by Sean M. Brooks

This article outlines and dates the three phases of Poul Anderson's career as a writer, with representative examples taken from his works. Considering how vast Anderson's output was from 1947 to his death in 2001, it will not be practical or desirable to cite more than a few of his many short stories and novels.  And one weakness of this essay is how I have completely ignored his mysteries, historical novels, and non fictional works.  One last point: this arbitrary carving up of a writer's career into phases is an artificial construct by critics, commentators, and fans, and should be done cautiously, with a grain of salt.

Strictly speaking, it would be correct to date Anderson's career as beginning in September 1944, when AMAZING published his first short story, "A Matter of Relativity."  However, dating the beginning of the early phase of his career to the publication of "Tomorrow's Children" (ASTOUNDING, March 1947) is more realistic.  Because Anderson only began to write regularly from 1947 onwards.

I argue for dating Anderson's early phase from 1947 when "Tomorrow's Children" (which became the first part of TWILIGHT WORLD) was published. And I date the end of this early phase in Anderson's career to 1958, when THE ENEMY STARS was published.  This early phase was when Anderson was still learning how to write, to find his natural voice as a writer, and when he began writing about many of the ideas and themes dearest to his mind.  This early period is also when we can detect a few false starts, or perhaps merely a change of mind in how he thought about and wrote his stories.  The clearest example of that being the Psychotechnic stories (found in collections such as THE PSYCHOTECHNIC LEAGUE, COLD VICTORY, STARSHIP, and novels like VIRGIN PLANET and THE PEREGRINE).

One of the false starts I believe can be found in Anderson's early phase is "Genius"  (ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION, December 1948). I base this on comments by a critic whose name I cannot convincingly recall (it may have been Sandra Miesel) who argued this very early story contradicted the moral values and beliefs of Poul Anderson.  I wish I could cite the author by name and quote the exact text.  I apologize for this vague and unsatisfactory paragraph and hope I can replace it if I find the text I am incompletely remembering.

Besides hard science fiction Poul Anderson also wrote a smaller but still impressive amount of fantasies, both novels and short stories.  The most significant example of that, during his early phase, being THE BROKEN SWORD (Abelard: 1954).  It's interesting to note how he became dissatisfied with the original form of that novel and published a revised version 1971. Which means THE BROKEN SWORD can be found in both his early and middle periods.  The following bit from Anderson's "Foreword" to the 1971 Del Rey/Ballantine Books edition of THE BROKEN SWORD gives us some understanding of why he became dissatisfied with the first version: "I would not myself write anything so headlong, so prolix, and so unrelievedly savage.  My vein is more that of THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS."

Going back to the Psychotechnic stories, in an "Author's Note" that Anderson placed at the end of THE PSYCHOTECHNIC LEAGUE (New York, Pinnacle Books, 1981) we are given some comments about his first "future history" and why he eventually became dissatisfied with it.  On page 284 Anderson wrote:
    A good reason for this abandonment was that the real world had, predictably, not been behaving as described.  For example, World War Three remains ahead of us, rather than behind.  No doubt I could have fudged my dates a bit. However, I could not explain away important scientific discoveries and technological advances which I had failed to foresee.
    People and institutions had also changed profoundly, as had my view of them. Once I was a flaming liberal, a fact which is probably most obvious in "Un-Man." Nowadays I consider the United Nations a dangerous farce on which we ought to ring down the curtain.  (In justice to it and myself, though, please remember that when I wrote this novella the U.N. had quite a different character from that it has since acquired, and looked improvable.)
I date Anderson's middle period as beginning with the publication of WE CLAIM THESE STARS! (Ace, 1959).  This middle period is marked by the confidence and strength with which Anderson wrote.  Two of his most prominent series of stories which began in his early phase, the stories featuring the Polesotechnic League/Terran Empire and the Time Patrol, reached their full maturity in this middle phase (although Anderson wrote one last Time Patrol story late, in 1995).  I would date the end of this middle period to 1989, when THE BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS was published. BOAT shows both definite similarities with Anderson's earlier works and touches on the ideas and themes which would dominate the works he wrote during the last twelve years of his life.

David G. Hartwell contributed a prefatory essay to the fourth volume of NESFA Press' reprinting of many of Anderson's shorter works in ADMIRALTY: THE COLLECTED SHORT WORKS OF POUL ANDERSON (2011).  What he said on page 10 admirably describes qualities which can be found in the stories Anderson wrote during his middle period (in fact, in all three phases).  Hartwell wrote: "Instead, again in the hard SF tradition, he most often wrote about strong men and women pitted against the challenge of survival in the face of the natural universe.  Some of them die.  But Anderson was optimist enough to see beyond the dark times into both a landscape, sometimes a starscape, and a future of wonders--for the survivors.  Anderson's future is not for the lazy or the stay-at-homes.  He was fairly gloomy about current social trends, big government, repression of the individual, so he catapulted his characters into a future of new frontiers, making them face love and death in vividly imagined and depicted environments far from home.  I recall the power and beauty and pathos of his fine black hole story, "Kyrie," the wit of THE MAN WHO COUNTS (THE WAR OF THE WING MEN) the good humor of "A Bicycle Built for Brew," the enormous scope and amazing comprehension of "Memorial."  His range was impressive."

(Hartwell's mentioning of "Memorial" puzzles me, I can't find it among Anderson's works.  The item closest to it being "In Memoriam," which can most conveniently be found in ALL ONE UNIVERSE, published by Tor Books in 1996.)

And I would date the beginning of Anderson's middle period in his writing of fantasies to the publication of THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS in 1961. However, since this edition was only an expanded version of the original form of the novel first published by the MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION in September/October 1953, this story belongs more to Anderson's early phase.  A truer representative of Anderson's work in fantasies dating to his middle phase is A MIDSUMMER TEMPEST (Doubleday, 1974).  An especially interesting thing to note about this book is how it was written almost entirely in blank verse, the form of poetry used by William Shakespeare for his plays.  In other words, TEMPEST was written as an act of homage to the Bard.

I am convinced Poul Anderson was a master short story writer.  In both fantasy and hard science fiction.  By turns poetic and elegiac, and scrupulously faithful to known science or not too impossible extrapolations from what was known.  He also excelled in describing his characters and the backgrounds of his stories.

What were some of the ideas and themes which Anderson took up with, in my opinion, magnificent success, in his later years?  Immortality, artificial intelligence based on computer technology (AI, for short), the uploading of human personalities into computer networks (and their downloading into human bodies created for them via DNA engineering and cloning), nanotechnology, even raising animal species to human levels of intelligence, etc. Albeit, as of this writing, we are seeing results in the actual world only in cloning and nanotech.  I am skeptical some of the themes Anderson speculated about in his later years will ever actually come to pass, such as immortality and AI.

One of the ideas which came most strongly to me as marking Anderson's late phase was how WELL he wrote during the period 1989-2001.  It is my opinion that THE BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS marks both the end of his middle phase and the beginning of his late period.  These years shows Anderson as not being content to rest on his laurels and rehash old ideas and themes from his earlier years.  Instead, his late phase is marked by how boldly he tried out new ideas, some of them very strange to me!  I refer, of course, to his four HARVEST OF STARS books, STARFARERS, GENESIS, and the posthumously published FOR LOVE AND GLORY.  I ardently recommend readers to try out the HARVEST OF STARS books, despite the difficult ideas found in them (some of which, as noted above, I am skeptical will ever actually come to pass).

One of the themes which marked Anderson's later years was how he preferred to speculate about STL means of mankind reaching the stars.  Mostly, of course, because that was, given our current knowledge of science, more likely than having a FTL drive.  But he did use FTL for his last novel, FOR LOVE AND GLORY.

Compared to his early and middle phases, Anderson wrote fewer fantasies during his late period, 1989 to 2001.  The first being "Faith" (co-authored with Karen Anderson) published in AFTER THE KING (1992).  And the first of only two fantasy novels he wrote during his later years was WAR OF THE GODS (Tor: 1997).  Truth to say, I consider WAR to be one of Anderson's very few weaker books.  The second being OPERATION LUNA (1999), placed in the same "world" as OPERATION CHAOS.

I should also note that during his later years Anderson continue to write short stories, both hard SF and fantasy.  Examples being "Death and the Knight," and the posthumously published "Pele" (set in Larry Niven's Man/Kzin wars series) and "The Lady of the Winds" (set in the Thieves World fantasy series).
