Ythrian History

Whereas the periods of interplanetary exploration and of the Grand Survey could each have been expanded into a series that would have become a sub-series of Poul Anderson's Technic History, the story of the exploration of Avalon is part of such a sub-series:

in "Wings of Victory," human explorers discover Ythri and make first contact with Ythrians;

in "The Problem of Pain," Ythrians with some human employees explore Avalon;

in "Lodestar," an Ythrian ship, the Gaiian, transports Nicholas van Rijn and Coya Conyon to Mirkheim for a confrontation with David Falkayn;

in "Wingless," human beings and Ythrians colonize the Hesperian Islands on Avalon;

in "Rescue on Avalon," these two species colonize the Coronan continent on Avalon;

in The People Of The Wind, human and Ythrian Avalonians successfully resist the Terran Empire;

in The Day Of Their Return, an Avalonian Ythrian is an agent both for the Domain of Ythri and for the Terran Empire against the Merseian Roidhunate;

in A Stone In Heaven, Dominic Flandry refers to the biracial culture on Avalon;

later, unfortunately, we know only of human and post-human civilizations in different parts of the galaxy.

Kaor, Paul!

I agree, the post-Imperial era was inadequately covered in the Technic series. Well, Anderson did say that everything he wanted to say in that timeline had been said. So it was time to move on to other ideas and themes.

I'm reminded of Stirling's Emberverse series, enormously with his fans, but one which he terminated with THE SKY BLUE WOLVES. I pointed out to some of those fans that it was plain Stirling wanted to go on to other ideas.

Ad astra! Sean
