Ythrians And Avalon

We have been focusing on the first three instalments in Poul Anderson's Technic History:

"The Saturn Game"
"Wings of Victory"
"The Problem of Pain"

All three of these stories are pre-League and each recounts the exploration of a different planet: Iapetus; Ythri; Avalon. In addition, "Wings..." and "The Problem..." are the first two of seven instalments to feature human-Ythrian interactions and "The Problem..." is the first of four in which those interactions occur on Avalon.

Of the seven Ythrian-related instalments, five are short stories collected in The Earth Book Of Stormgate and two are novels, The People Of The Wind and The Day Of Their Return. Can we say then that the Earth Book and the two novels form a loose Ythrian trilogy? Very loose?

All seven instalments were first published in 1973 except the first, "Wings...," which was first published in 1972. Thus, the Ythrian section of the Technic History was written in a single short period whereas the History as a whole sprawls from 1951 to 1985.

Since Avalon is the setting of three short stories and one novel, its environment is even more well-realized than others in the Technic History.

Kaor, Paul!

I agree these seven stories are at least loosely connected, with THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN showing the Domain becoming an ally of the Empire.
