"The Saturn Game."
The Milky Way is described as a "...silver road..." (p. 60) cloven between the stars. Have we noted this description before? See here. I cannot remember.
"'The sand-ice slid from above as fast as they could cast to down." (p. 61)
Should that be "...cast it down..."? It also reads "...cast to down." in:
Poul Anderson, "The Saturn Game" IN Anderson, Explorations (New York, 1981), pp. 12-81 AT IV, p. 70.
During Scobie's and Broberg's exhausting struggle for survival, their game resumes. Ricia tells Kendrick that she had called Alvarlan's soul from Hell but that his body had been too old to receive it. However, he passed peacefully, magically making for himself a tomb with a starlight ceiling.
The two parallel narratives will reach a shared climax.

Kaor, Paul!
I think "cast to down" was a misprint and error which somehow slipped past the proof readers. Your suggested correction, "cast it down" is correct and smoother reading.
Ad astra! Sean
