Three gamers explore Iapetus. The narration is third person but unusually without a viewpoint character. Either Broberg or Scobie inwardly recapitulates the game so far:
Ricia entered the Midwood on Midsummer Eve, hoping to be found and taken by the King, which happened;
she experiences ecstasy, terror, beauties and marvels when he keeps her captive in the City of Ice;
her mentor, Alvarlan, located her in spirit quest and informed Sir Kendrick of the Isles;
five other characters are mentioned as not being present at the time - N'Kuma the Lionslayer, Bela of Eastmarch, Karina of the Far West, Lady Aurelia and Olav Harpmaster.
We know that:
Jean Broberg is Ricia;
Colin Scobie is Kendrick;
Luis Garsilaso is Alvarlan;
George Harding is N'Kuma;
other Chronos crew members must be Bela, Karina, Aurelia and Olav -
- but it seems that the King is merely imagined.

And that mention of "Bela of Eastmarch" was an inside jest by Anderson. He was a founding member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and known as Sir Bela of Eastmarch.
