How would you organize an expedition that was going to take 123 years to reach Alpha Centauri?
If technologically feasible, the following would help:
enough acceleration to benefit from time dilation;
suspended animation;
longevity.
Other Requirements
A very large vehicle, more like a moving space station than a conventional spaceship.
Enough internal space for an ecology and for freedom of movement.
A highly trained interdisciplinary crew strongly motivated to explore the universe.
Cosmic observations and experiments to be performed throughout the journey, not just on arrival at the destination.
More than just a journey to another star - a life spent travelling through and exploring the universe.
In "The Troublemakers," we find:
a large spaceship with metal corridors and cabins;
casteism between officers and crew;
power struggles between factions of officers.
Something is not right but more will be revealed.

Kaor, Paul!
What you would LIKE to see in a STL generation ship are good things. BUT, humans being what they are, we are more likely to at get least some of what we see in the PIONEER, such as those power struggles between factions.
Anderson's scenario, absent the psychotechnic pre-planning, is more realistic.
Ad astra! Sean
