The Transformation Of Gabriel Stewart

The Day Of Their Return.

Does Aycharaych deploy some extra technology that excites the brains of Aeneans?

In conversation with Tatiana Thane, Gabriel Stewart cynically remarks that, if nothing else, the idea that a forerunner of the Builders has arrived on Aeneas will make good propaganda. He says this because:

"He had not been back on Aeneas sufficiently long to absorb its atmosphere of expectation." (15, p. 194)

This is odd because earlier Stewart had told Tatiana:

"'You've heard also. You must have. Signs, tokens, precognitions.... Never mind his weakling father. Ivar is rightful leader of free Aeneas - when Builders return, which they will, which they will. And you are his bride who will bear his son that Builders will make more than human.'
"Belief stood incandescent in his eyes." (12, p. 172)

So there is something in the atmosphere of Aeneas. It makes Riverfolk say:

"'I have heard about one seer who walks there now, who will call back the Old Shen from the stars. Will our dead then rise from the waters?'" (12, p. 169)

"'You are the Firstling - our rightful leader that every Aenean can follow - to throw out those mind-stifling Terrans and make ready for the Advent that is promised - What can we do for you, lord?'" (13, p. 175)

And Jaan the prophet says:

"'Welcome, Ivar Frederiksen, deliverer of your world.'" (15, p. 187)

How much disappointment will there be when Ivar goes over to the Terrans? Or does the fervour recede when Aycharaych withdraws?

There's probably a lot of kicking the dirt and 'gosh-darn-it'. OTOH, they don't have another war.

Kaor, Paul!

Ditto, what Stirling said. Also, I can imagine people like Stewart being both believers AND cynical. With the proviso that as time passes cynicism might fade to complete belief. If only because that would relieve one of trying to hold incompatible beliefs!
