Personal Prowess And Planetary Purpose

The People Of The Wind.

Remember the original reading order of Poul Anderson's Technic History. The Polesotechnc League Tetralogy, prominently featuring both Nicholas van Rijn and his protege, David Falkayn, is immediately followed by The People Of The Wind, prominently featuring Tabitha Falkayn, her ancestors including both van Rijn and Falkayn, the latter having married the former's granddaughter.

Tabitha's planetary achievement is that she originates the idea that saves Avalon from its Terran invaders. Her personal accomplishment is that she helps Christopher Holm to overcome his unbalanced attitude to women. Chris's father, Daniel Holm, reflects:

"Well, well, Chris has finally met a woman who's not just a sex machine or a she-Ythrian to him." (XIII, p. 587)

Chris not only marries Tabitha but also puts things right with his female Ythrian childhood friend, Eyath, whose viewpoint concludes the novel:

"Snowpeaks flamed. The sun stood up in a shout of light.
"High is heaven and holy." (XIX, p. 662)

And, in The Technic Civilization Saga, that concludes Volume III, Rise Of The Terran Empire.

Kaor, Paul!

Not just about women, Tabitha helped Christopher to overcome the DISDAIN he had for his entire species, the human race. He finally becomes a LIKABLE person.

Ad astra! Sean
