Assimilating Memories

In the Harvest Of Stars future history, there is not only the problem of editing accumulating memories but also the problem of assimilating downloaded memories. While download Guthrie remains on Demeter in the Alpha Centaurian system, three of his downloads each go to explore an oxygen-atmosphere planet in the systems of 82 Eridani, Beta Hydri and HD44594 Puppis respectively.

The downloads that had gone to the first two, nearer, systems return and are easily assimilated. However, the third probe was gone so long and had learned so much and so much has changed on Demeter in its absence that there is considerable confusion before all the memories can be incorporated coherently and communion with Demeter Mother helps this process. 

Sometimes a daytime event reminds us of a dream of the previous night that otherwise would have remained forgotten. It is rare that we remember an experience from a very long time ago that we have never thought of since then but very occasionally a new experience triggers such a memory. HD44594 II would be colonizeable but is too far away for organic human beings to reach it even by suspended animation. However, while that probe was gone, Demeter Mother has begun and she will be able to re-create human beings from downloads and DNA. Thus, the united memories generate a solution.
