Sibylla was so inhospitable that the colonists faked an alien attack as the only way to get the Directorate to take them home.
Anderson's works identify three main enemies of mankind:
(i) hostile races like Merseians that want the same planets;
(ii) mankind;
(iii) the environment (see The Enemy and Inner And Outer).
The Sibyllans faked a version of (i) in order to escape from (iii).

And we see a suggestion in "The Queen of Air and Darkness" that an unfriendly non human race had visited Roland before any human colonists had arrived. Sherrinford's comments that there were other intelligent races with STL travel makes this possible. But it's in the Directorate series that we see Anderson working out how a STL interstellar war might be practical.
