As usual, what begins as a short list grows and gets out of control:
Caleb in the Bible and Odysseus in the Iliad;
Maugham's Ashenden and Buchan's Hannay in WWI;
SM Stirling's Luz O'Malley in an alternative Great War;
Dennis Wheatley's Gregory Sallust written, and also set, during WWII;
Fleming's Bond and le Carre's Smiley in the Cold War - the latter also later;
Frederick Forsyth's The Fox, published in 2018, set in 2019, politically and technologically up-to-date, including the author's pungent comments on US and UK responses to 9/11;
Poul Anderson's Dominic Flandry series, futuristic space opera becoming substantial future history.
(OK. This post has grown by one era since being published.)

Kaor, Paul!
I will google Frederick Forsythe's THE FOX, since that is the most recent. It might be of some interest.
