The Queen becomes darkness as her voice becomes wind. Brooks captures the same root of paganism as Poul Anderson did in the passages quoted in the linked posts.

And that reminded me, oddly enough, of Poul Anderson's contribution to MEDITATIONS ON MIDDLE EARTH: "Awakening The Elves." An essay in which Anderson praised Tolkien for rescuing the elves from their "twee" doldrums.
