The Narrative Speeds Up

Poul Anderson, Harvest Of Stars.

In 46, the downloads prepare to leave in the advance ship.

In 47, Terrestrial society is noticeably changing and the living Kyra Davis, who will also travel to Alpha Centauri, says goodbye to friends on Earth.

In 48, the downloads explore and terraform the Centaurian planet, Demeter.

In 49, living emigrants wake from suspended animation after arriving at Alpha Centauri.

In 50, Selenarchic rule ends, Luna will join the World Federation, Earth is being transformed and living Kyra is in Port Fireball on Demeter.

After a slow start, the future takes off. Freedom and self-determination can mean running a company in the Solar System or building a civilization on an extra-solar planet. External conditions determine the content of freedom.

Kaor, Paul!

Quite frankly, I remembered how I did not like the changes on Earth near the end of HARVEST OF STARS. Things like the increasing irrelevance of the nations of Earth under the increasing dominance of the World Federation. To say nothing of the ominous invention of AIs!

And of course Luna joined the Federation unwillingly and only because it was forced to. My sympathies lies with the Fireball and Lunarian exiles who settled the Alpha Centaurian system.
