Poul Anderson, The Fleet Of Stars, 4.
He'o is an intelligent seal:
"...his species had had many generations to become civilized - but down underneath he remained a fighter, a hunter. At home he often chased down live fish and caught them in his jaws to eat. The scars on his flanks, which he'd disdained to have erased -" (p. 50)
Sounds familiar? It should. This passage exactly describes an Ythrian except that Ythrians fly whereas seals swim. What a pity that they cannot meet but they inhabit different universes. And isn't there an Avalonian Ythrian who has disdained to erase scars? Here I appeal to blog readers instead of trying to find the reference myself.
High is heaven and holy. Fair winds forever.

Kaor, Paul!
I'm not quite convinced that "Fair winds, forever" is something an intelligent being descended from aquatic hunters would use. Something more directly tied to the ocean or sea seems more natural. Hmmm, "Fair waves, forever"? Or "Fair seas, forever"? Or "Fair hunting, forever"?

Sean,
But I was quoting Ythrians.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Oops! I thought you were quoting He'o!
