Djana's Religion

A Circus of Hells.

When, approaching Wayland, Djana recites the Hail Mary, she might be simply reverting to her childhood. However, she tries to come to terms with Christian belief. She finds fault with men but remembers that God created them and that Jesus was a man. She prays fervently. At last, when she feels that she has been used by Ydwyr, then by Flandry, she says that she has learned:

"'...that there's no one who cares. Not even You.'"
- CHAPTER TWENTY, p. 365.

"You," not "you." That would once have been taken to mean that God exists but does not care. Now it is more likely to mean that He does not care because He does not exist. Either way, it means the end of a willing relationship with Him. Many believers would not draw such a conclusion from Flandry's betrayal but each of us has to find our own understanding of life. Any God worthy of the name should stand by Djana whatever she believes. We value Djana and Kossara.

Kaor, Paul!

Here Djana irritates me. Exactly how did Flandry betray her? Did he ever make her any promises of either marrying her or agreeing to a long term relationship? No, he did not. Did Flandry swindle her of her money? No, he did not. In fact he helped make Leon Ammon pay her more than what he first offered her.

Flandry could not justly be accused of treating Djana badly.

Sean,

She felt used by his attempt to recruit her into Intelligence because of her psychic skill. That is the specific point, whether or not we agree with her about it.

Paul.

While I agree Flandry could have been more tactful about that suggestion he made, I continue to disagree with Djana.
