A Change Of Face

The Rebel Worlds.

In CHAPTER TWO, Dominic Flandry:

arrives by aircab on the 50th-level parking flange of Intelligence headquarters at Admiralty Center in the North American Rocky Mountains on Terra, a planet that we have not seen since the Emperor's Birthday at the beginning of Ensign Flandry;

is admitted by a marine guard after ID verification;

reflects on the fate of the Empire while walking along halls crowded with hurrying individuals of different ranks, roles and species;

gives directions to and exchanges addresses with a young woman;

ascends by gravshaft to the 97th level;

now walks among persons of higher rank than his;

enters the suite of Vice Admiral Sir Ilya Kheraskov who remarks, "'I see you have a new face,'" (p. 383) although they have never met.

In a film, this should be the first moment when we see Flandry's face and realize that he is played by a new actor who will remain in place for the rest of the series, aging thanks to Make Up.

Kaor, Paul!

Well, of course the file on Flandry studied by Kheraskov would include pictures of Flandry before and after that biosculpt job!

Any filmed version of Flandry walking thru Admiralty Center would need to be careful not to show us his new face before Kheraskov commented on it.

Ad astra! Sean

That would be a nice touch -- and a perfectly legitimate way of changing main lead actors.

Change of actor necessary at this point so it fits perfectly.

Years ago, British TV had a Robin Hood series. Main actor left at end of a season. Solution: Robin dies! Next season: Merry Men carry on. A new guy called "Robert" joins the team and becomes its leader. The story as it has come down to us is a blend of the adventures of two different guys. Thus, inconsistencies in the legend can be ironed out.

Kaor, to Both!

And I like the illustrations for the Ace Books edition of A STONE IN HEAVEN (1979). They were plainly done by an artist who actually read the text with care before he started drawing. His work gave me a satisfactory of what Flandry looked like after that biosculpt job.

Ad astra! Sean
