In "The Game of Glory," Flandry does not have his own spaceship, the Hooligan, and there is no mention of his servant, Chives, whereas both the Hooligan and Chives are present in the immediately following "Hunters of the Sky Cave." However, this does not leave time for the extra-solar exploit in which Flandry acquired Chives as recounted by the latter in A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows.

Captain Continuity
In The Technic Civilization Saga, Volume V, Captain Flandry: Defender Of The Terran Empire, we read "The Game of Glory" immediately after "Honorable Enemies" where the former story seems to fit because it mentions Flandry learning how to lie to a telepath. The next story after that, "A Message in Secret," might also seem to follow directly from "Honorable Enemies" because, in the latter, Flandry is at Betelgeuse and, in the former, Betelgeuseans transport him to the planet Altai. However, Flandry was at Betelgeuse as part of a Terran delegation that would subsequently have returned to Terra. The journey to Altai is a new mission for which he would have set out from Terra. Nevertheless, "A Message in Secret" does seem to fit as the next installment in the series after "Honorable Enemies."

Kaor, Paul!
We are not told how long or when Chives became Flandry's invaluable "gentlebeing's gentlebeing," but I think the difficulty you seem to have in mind can be easily explained. I mean, there would be times when it would not be practical for Chives to accompany Flandry on his missions.
What I thought truly odd was how there was no mention of Chives in THE GAME OF EMPIRE, when five or six years earlier we see him described as aging and becoming frail in A STONE IN HEAVEN. I suggested the simplest reason for that was Anderson forgetting to tell us what happened to Chives in the years before GAME.
Ad astra! Sean
