Levels Of Sacrifice

(i) Human sacrifice.

(ii) The Vedic horse sacrifice.

(iii) Animal sacrifice in the Jewish Temple.

(iv) Mithraic sacrifice of a dove and a white bull in Poul and Karen Anderson's The King Of Ys.

(v) Christian belief in the significance of the Crucifixion and its sacramentaliztion with bread and wine.

(vi) The Buddha says somewhere that the best sacrifice is an offering not of blood to the gods but of food to the poor.

(vii) Some of us think that technology can be used to produce abundant wealth and thus to abolish poverty. In such a society, astronauts will sacrifice their individual security and safety to explore the Solar System on behalf of humanity.

Kaor, Paul!

But only the Catholics and Orthodox and those Oriental Churches which preserved a valid priesthood believe that in the Eucharist Our Lord becomes truly present under the accidents of bread and wine at the consecration. The Mass is not only a commemoration of the once and for all sacrifice of Christ on the Cross it is also a re-presentation, in an un-bloody manner, of that sacrifice to the Father.

Those Protestant churches which also have a Eucharistic rite argue, most of them, that it is only a "commemoration." And deny kind of Real Presence.

Sorry, this was a bit theological, I know!
