"The Corkscrew of Space"

Poul Anderson, "The Corkscrew of Space" IN Anderson, The Collected Short Works of Poul Anderson, Volume 2, The Queen Of Air And Darkness (Framington, MA, 2009), pp. 361-368.

I had completely forgotten this story but find that I have not only read it before but also posted about it. See here. I am surprised that I found so much to say and will not add any more here. (There were native furred Martians, now extinct.) Other activities call.

Laters.

Kaor, Paul!

And what might be discovered for REAL if/when Elon Musk founds his colony on Mars? We already KNOW Mars used to have flowing rivers, and as a result, a thicker atmosphere. There's only so much you can do remotely using small rovers controlled from Earth. You need PEOPLE on the spot to carry out truly extensive and deep investigations.

And there were some lingering hopes in the 1950's that Mars was both more habitable and had intelligent beings living there.

Ad astra! Sean

Note how recently we knew so little about Mars.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

Exactly! And I have wished many times humans had reached Mars decades ago, as could have been done.
