A Four-Volume, Five-Period Future History Series

Poul Anderson's Harvest Of Stars future history series fills four volumes but covers five periods. In Volume II, The Stars Are Also Fire, even-numbered chapters, all entitled The Mother of the Moon, are set long before Volume I, Harvest Of Stars, whereas odd-numbered chapters, unentitled, are set long after Volume I but before Volume III, Harvest The Fire

Luna becomes independent and sovereign in Volume II, Chapter 40, but loses its sovereignty near the end of Volume I. At that time, some Lunarians go to Alpha Centauri. At the end of Volume II, Lunarians learn of the asteroid, Proserpina, and, in Volumes III and IV, The Fleet Of Stars, a Lunarian population prospers on Proserpina.

Kaor, Paul!

As summarized by you, the organizing of the HARVEST books does seem somewhat confusing. But I think the progress of the story is clear enough when the books are actually read.
