Gods In SF

Poul Anderson's texts are like stained glass windows in which we see significant colors and shapes and like clear glass windows through which we see everything else. Analysis of passages in The Game Of Empire led, in one direction, to the Rig Veda and, in another, through Ares, to the DCEU. Gods are prominent characters in Anderson's heroic fantasies and sometimes referenced in his hard sf, e.g.:
the Zacharian divine names
Thor described in World Without Stars;
we remember that ravens see and hear for Odin.

Fantasy and sf unite in the Old Phoenix multiverse.

Kaor, Paul!

And I wondered just now why the Zacharians used the names of gods so often as given names? A sign of egotism, pride? Perhaps an unspoken declaration of feeling themselves superior to every body else? We certainly don't see any Zacharians simply named John, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Michael, etc.!
