A Time Patrol timecycle disappears at one set of spatio-temporal coordinates and appears at another.
A Time Lord TARDIS does likewise but meanwhile exists with reduced duration in the Temporal Vortex.
Temporal Vehicles
The Time Machine undergoes either forwards or backwards time dilation while becoming unaccountably invisible and intangible.
Martin Saunders' time projector disappears at one temporal coordinate and appears at another but meanwhile exists with reduced duration in the grayness.
This thought was meant to lead to another but this is a hasty breakfast post so there will be more later.

The difficulty you raised about Wells' Time Machine applies as well to the mutant time travelers of Anderson's THERE WILL BE TIME. That is, becoming unaccountably invisible and intangible (while moving thru time at the same location).

Sean,
Indeed but here I was focusing on vehicles. THE CORRIDORS OF TIME is relevant to THE TIME MACHINE in a different way because both texts discuss time as a fourth dimension.

And in a much more sophisticated way than what Wells able to achieve. SF writers like De Camp, Ward Moore, Poul Anderson (esp. him), had the time needed to explore the implications and consequences of time traveling.
