Continents And Climates

"Progress," pp. 90-91.

On an island in the Indian Ocean, the characters drink on a verandah while:

darkness is deep and blue;
sea glimmers;
land is black;
stars are brilliant;
candlelight is yellow;
bats dart;
a lizard scuttles;
wild pigs grunt;
a peacock screams;
insects chirp;
coolness is jasmine-scented -

- and the Merican wishes to God he were back in Corado where his clan has a lodge among the pines and deer on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Kaor, Paul!

Probably because the Merican finds the hot tropical weather of the Andaman Islands far too humid and uncomfortable for his taste!

Also, it always struck me as odd that the Indians would put their (very expensive) experimental fusion reactor on an -island-, when they know the Maurai will be hostile. The sea is their (Sea People) element! Wouldn't a remote valley in the Himalayas be better?

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I wondered about that too! It would seem more logical for the Brahmards to locate this experimental fusion reactor in a part of their domain easily defended by their army and air force. Then they could tell the Maurai to go take a flying leap!

I think a reason was given in "Progress" for why Andaman Island was chosen. I will look for it.

Skimming thru "Progress" I found a possible hint as to way the Brahmards chose to place their extremely costly experimental fusion reactor in the Andaman islands. This is what I read on page 108 of MAURAI & KITH, Lorn sunna Browen speaking: "Some of our work is confidential. We can' risk information leaking out." I concluded that, rightly or wrongly, the Brahmards decided that security would be easier to clamp down on a primitive island. If so, they were mistaken!
