Heroes save the world. What is that like as a job?
(i) Steve Matuchek: "'Saving the world sure does get in the way of enjoying it.'"
-Operation Luna, 22, p. 201.
(ii) Mr. Incredible (from memory): "Sometimes I wish the world would just stay saved!"
(iii) Flash Gordon (from memory): swings into the future on the Time Pendulum, sees a giant statue of himself and on the pedestal these words appear, "Hail, Flash Gordon! Glorious Savior of Mongo!" But, before he can read the dates under his name, he is pulled back into the past...
I am rereading Operation Luna and quoting it accurately whereas the Flash Gordon incident is embellished by memory - but that is how most hero stories live in our minds.
Steve and Virginia Matuchek are in good company.

Kaor, Paul!
And I recall similar thoughts by Dominic Flandry, that the more the Empire cracked and crumbled, the more he and others like him dashed around trying to patch up the leaks. Else the Long Night would come in THEIR sacrosanct life times.
Ad astra! Sean
I've always liked the bit where Mrs. Incredible/Elastigirl tells her son Dash (who's upset about not being able to use his super-speed), "Everyone's special."
To which he memorably replies: "Yeah. Which means nobody is."
