"Humanity are merely tools for creating the Internet-of-All-Things, which may eventually spread out from planet Earth to pervade the whole galaxy and even the whole universe. The cosmic data-processing system would be like God. It will be everywhere and control everything, and humans are destined to merge into it." (p. 444) (For reference, see here.)
Two Observations
(i) "...tools..." can only be a metaphor. Interpreted literally, it would mean that a conscious being or beings had preexisted and designed conscious beings, which is contradictory.
(ii) "...to merge..." is not to "...vanish..." (see the above link) and presumably human consciousness can only merge into a greater consciousness? Indeed, Harari goes on to compare this cosmic Internet with the Hindu atman or universal soul. But, in that case, this ultimate data-processor is conscious and the idea that it might supersede humanity begins to make some sense.
Finally, of course, in Poul Anderson's Genesis, many human consciousnesses do merge into the greater post-organic consciousness.
