SM Stirling, The Golden Princess (New York, 2015), Chapter Five, pp. 86-87.
Gulls are white above blue water;
the wind carries the echo of their quarrels;
a red-tailed hawk soars below them;
wheat will turn gold;
Sierra peaks are blue-white;
the cool air smells of sea, herbs and wild roses;
the roses are pink-and-white.
Thus, sight, sound, scents and sensations - and the smell of the sea might be accompanied by a slight salt taste?

Kaor, Paul!
And I'm reminded of similar things in Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS, esp. the bit where Legolas said the sight and sound of the sea and gulls he saw at Pelargir awoke a longing for the sea in his heart. So that he could no longer be wholly content with forests and a pastoral life.
