Frederick Barbarossa

The Shield Of Time, PART SIX, 1137 A.D.

"Turmoil would follow [Emperor Lothair's] death, until Frederick Barbarossa finally won full control." (p. 312)

Barbarossa has taken his place in mythology:

"'Not many exceptions to the law of death have come my way,' observed MacPhee.
"'And how,' said Grace with much emphasis, 'how should you expect to be there on more than one such occasion? Were you a friend of Arthur's or Barbarossa's? Did you know Enoch or Elijah?'"
-CS Lewis, That Hideous Strength IN Lewis, The Cosmic Trilogy (London, 1990), pp. 349-753 AT CHAPTER 17, 4, p. 738.

Writing historical sf, Poul Anderson is concerned only with the historical Barbarossa who drowned and was buried. (The legend would have been boosted if the body had not been found.)

Kaor, Paul!

And of course we see Anderson making use of legends about heroes who would come back in times of need with Holger Danske in THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS.

Ad astra! Sean
