A Few Minor Points

The Dog And The Wolf.

Gratillonius, Corentinus and others fake a trial by ordeal for Cadoc:

"Solemnly, Bishop Corentinus led his priests out into the middle of the space. Mass had already been offered at the church; now they called on God beneath his Heaven. On this day, it had been announced, pagans might also invoke their deities here, if they did so inconspicuously." (XIII, 3, p. 259)

Thank you very much. Once a year at a community orchard near here, people chant for a good crop. It is impossible to hear whether the person next to you is chanting, "God send..." or "Gods send..." Thus, the community unites.

Dahut:

"...swam like a moonglade before him." (XIV, 5, p. 280) (Scroll down.)

Just below the moonglade, there is a misprint that I might have missed before: "men" have become "mean."

Corentinus praises Gratillonius' intentions as:

"'...worthy of a Maccabeus." (XV, 1, p. 288)

A few points in a rich text.

Another Double Moonglade

"Day of Burning."

See Falkayn Remembers... III.

As Chee Lan flies by night from the landed spaceship to the city of Ardaig on Merseia, we appreciate similarities and dissimilarities to Earth:

campfires and songs of the troopers guarding the ship;

a large passing hovercraft;

snow-covered wilderness of hills and woods;

cultivated land with villages around towering castles - feudalism combined with industrialization?;

Ardaig on the coast, neither gleaming nor brawling;

yellow windows like fireflies amid phosphorescent paving;

a double, then triple, moonglade on the bay of the River Oiss;

she enters the Old Quarter where ice covers the turfed streets, a Merseian rides a horned gwydh and street signs bear "...colorful heraldic emblems...," (p. 332) instead of words.

Across The Sky

This is another post for the Milky Way thread although the galaxy is not named in the relevant passage. The Arvelans, visiting aliens, are on Taiwan at night. They see:

a mountain rising to the right and plunging to the left;

downward, yellow windows and a twinkling seashore village;

"...the ocean, like living obsidian, bridged by a moonglade." (p. 133) (In this linked Wiktionary article, notice the quotation from Mirkheim);

"Across the sky glimmered the galaxy." (ibid.);

there are many individual stars.

We have encountered this use of the word "glade" three times before:

Falkayn Remembers... III

See:

Falkayn Remembers...
Falkayn Remembers...II

The full list of what he remembers includes:

"...a double moonglade on the Auroral ocean...";
"...the splendor of an Ythrian on the wing..."
-Mirkheim, VI, p. 109.

Here is another use of "glade" to mean moonlight.

On at least three occasions, Anderson refers to the "splendor" of a flying Ythrian. This passage in Mirkheim must be the source of the title of my post, "An Ythrian On The Wing," see here.

Thus, we find one reference to an Ythrian in Volume IV of what I call the Polesotechnic League Tetralogy. In the original reading order of the early part of the Technic History, the Ythrians do not come on stage until the two Avalonian volumes after the League Tetralogy.

Like Methuselah's Children in Robert Heinlein's Future History, Mirkheim draws together many disparate strands of its future history series.

The Trader Team On Merseia

After the audience chamber, Falkayn sees a little more of Merseia. See:

In And Around Castle Afon

The trader team allows us to see Merseia through the eyes not only of a Hermetian human being but also of a Cynthian and a Wodenite. The Cynthian, Chee Lan, flies to a night-time rendezvous. See:

Chee Lan In Flight

Before that, she watches, on the spaceship viewscreen, as:

night falls;
Neihevin rises, full, Luna-sized and copper-colored;
Lythyr, already risen, is a small, pale crescent;
forests glisten with frost;
Rigel blazes in the middle of a constellation called the Spear Bearer.

While she flies:

the chill air feels liquid;
the hum of her gravity harness is lost in an enormous silence;
she sees campfires and hears a song from the Merseian troopers guarding the ship;
a hovercraft passes athwart the Milky Way;
she flies above wilderness covered in snow, then above fields, villages and castles, then above a seacoast and the city of Ardaig with its phosphorescent paving and River Oiss.

Ardaig, unTechnic, neither gleams nor brawls. The bay has a triple moonglade as Wythna rises. Machines murmur. Chee Lan lands in the darkling Old Quarter.

There is more but maybe not now.
