Sexual behaviour has to be the most variable aspect of human activity. The entire gamut: promiscuity; celibacy; monogamy; arranged marriages; homosexuality; etc.
Kukulkan to Diana:

"Her face heated. 'And not yet ready for motherhood, thanks!'" (p. 381)
Diana is "deserving." (The deserving poor?) Kukulkan generously offers to make her pregnant, then to leave her to fend for herself. To him, this is acceptable behaviour. Poul Anderson gets this right. There will be as many variations in the future as there have been in the past.
The Zacharians would have been alright if they had not been supremacist.

Human sexual behavior is variable, but for the majority, (theoretically) monogamous marriage has been the standard pattern. Even in polygamous societies most people aren't.
