Roan Tom has rescued Yasmin, daughter of the deputy governor of Anushirvan, whose palace has been sacked, in the Shah-dom of Sassania. What is to be done with Yasmin? Tom cannot just:
"'...turn her loose on any random planet.'" (p. 463)
Nor can he make her his concubine because she is an aristocrat. So his wife, Dagny, insists that he go:
"...through a wedding ceremony with [Yasmin]..." (ibid.)
- thus making her his second wife. Yasmin's heritage is honourable and Dagny does not expect that this second wife will raise sons who will challenge hers for the heirship.
We all have problems and the solutions fit the problems.
