Cosmic Contexts

Technic civilization is confined to one volume of space near the edge of one spiral arm in one galaxy. Post-Technic civilizations spread through several spiral arms.

In Poul Anderson's World Without Stars, an instantaneous space jump enables men with indefinitely extended lifespans to trade with yonderfolk in other galaxies and to explore a planetary system in intergalactic space.

In Anderson's Tau Zero, a relativistic spaceship flies between groups of groups of galaxies and outlasts the universe. James Blish's Cities In Flight is progressively interplanetary, interstellar, intergalactic and extra-cosmic.

The Terran Empire exists against this cosmic context. Other galaxies are always visible even though never reached.

Kaor, Paul!

I recall how David Birr, correcting my wild suggestion that Nicholas van Rijn might use his last great journey of exploration to reach the Magellanic Clouds, estimated that would take Old Nick 30 or more years to get there, using Technic FTL hyperdrive. Oh well!

My recollection is that, in the far remote future, the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will "collide" to form a super galaxy.

Ad astra! Sean
