The People Of The Wind, XIV.
Rochefort, who has begun to learn Planha, must absent himself so that Arinnian, Hrill and Draun can discuss the war. Eyath, Arinnian's assistant, accompanies Rochefort. When they have left:
"Silence lingered behind them, save for a soughing in the trees outside." (p. 595)
Because I am seeking out passages that describe Avalonian nature, I noticed this sentence. Yet again, in a work by Poul Anderson, the wind underlines and almost comments on the action.
Rochefort rides Hrill's horse while Eyath rides a zirraukh which serves the same purpose. A sea breeze rustles silver-hued leaves in the clear light of Laura. Damp air prevents hoofs from raising dust. Poul Anderson always gives us such details but they are few in this chapter which is mainly about character interactions. Storm weather matches Eyath's bereavement in the following chapter but we will maybe reread that tomorrow. I try to show that, by reading Anderson's texts closely and carefully, we can immerse ourselves in the imagined environment.
