If Earth is an "integrate civilization," then we should see more evidence of it. There are just two indications. First, Pete remembers that psych training involved warnings against certain kinds of thoughts. Secondly:
"He was getting less nervous now; his trained cortex was taking over in his psychosomatic system." (p. 36)
That is good but we need more. Most of the time, Pete responds to events and to new experiences as if he had had no such training or preparation. He is easily misled by the tinklers which lure him toward what would have been an unpleasant death if he had not been rescued in the nick of time.

Kaor, Paul!
The "psych training" was simply a hastily thought out trope by Anderson as he attempted to flesh out the story. Its lack of plausibility contributed to the author's eventual dissatisfaction with the Psychotechnic stories.
Ad astra! Sean
