The Aenean Highlanders

The Day Of Their Return.

In conversation with Chunderban Desai, Peter Jowett lists Aenean subcultures:

tinerans
Riverfolk
Orcans
Highlanders
etc

We do not know any of the etc. Ivar Frederiksen spends time with tinerans, Riverfolk and Orcans, in that order, but not with Highlanders. We know that future historians prepare more background material than they use in their texts so it is possible that Poul Anderson had notes on the Aenean Highlanders. That group plays one indirect role when Tatiana Thane tells Gabriel Stweart:

"'...what I'll do is suggest [Desai] check on highlanders of Chalce. They're tough, independent-minded clansmen, you probably recall. It's quite plausible they'd rally 'round Ivar if he went to them, and that he'd do so on his own initiative. Well, it's big and rugged country, take many men and lots of time to search over. Meanwhile -'" (16, p. 194)

Meanwhile, those Chalcean highlanders would have been making their own creative contributions to the planetary millenarianism.

Kaor, Paul!

Actually, we don't know for sure if the Chalcean highlanders had any interest in Cosmenosist millenarianism. They might even have been strictly orthodox Jerusalem Catholics who would have nothing to do with Cosmenosism.

I hope that overflowing loose leaf binder of notes about the Technic stories compiled by Anderson still exists! A scholar like you could go to the CA university library where Anderson's widow bequeathed his papers. And hopefully find those notes.

Sean,

But the millenarianism affected all Aeneans. Catholics would expect the Second Coming.

Yes, but orthodox Catholics tend to be skeptical of such claims, keeping in mind what Christ said about no man knowing of His return. Even the apparitions of the BVM at Lourdes and Fatima had to undergo lengthy investigation before being declared as not contrary to faith and morals.

Sean,

Yes but we are imagining an apocalyptic frenzy on Aeneas in every part of society.

Paul.

Yes, frenzy and hysteria can overcome skepticism, good sense, and caution!
