Roger Penrose hypothesizes a connection between quanta and neurons. Neurologists know that neurons increase or decrease their firing and interact with each other but not how or even whether these interactions cause consciousness. It is possible to see the connections between neurons but not their connection with consciousness - but how could that be seen?

Penrose speculates that, within neurons, the mysteries of consciousness and of quantum mechanics somehow interconnect, the latter generating the former.
