The Stars Are Also Fire, 11.
The lost cause of the defeated Lyudovite Rebellion:
"Keep humanity in charge. Do not permit the making of fully conscious artificial intelligence. Stop before it is too late, and then consider how much mechanization and automation is really desirable." (p. 147)
Lyudovite = Luddite.
Although the Lyudovite Rebellion in the Harvest Of Stars future history was defeated, the Butlerian Jihad in the Dune future history succeeded, replacing computers with human calculators called Mentats.
And Frank Herbert must have named his Butlerian Jihad after Samuel Butler because the latter wrote Erewhon which introduced the idea of conscious machines long before Binder, Asimov etc.

And I agree with the Lyudovite view that however chaotic and blundering humans will be, THEY, not AIs or sophotects, should be in control, calling the shots. Fortunately, I don't really believe things like sophotects are likely.
I am not a fan of Herbert's DUNE books or the "prequels" written by his son and a co-author, so I never thought of connecting the Butlerian Jihad with Sameul Butler's novel EREWHON. Incidentally, that's the reverse spelling for NOWHERE. Meaning what Butler wrote about was nowhere to be found.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
Almost the reverse.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
You are right! I typed too hastily.
Ad astra! Sean
