Jesse Nicol reflects that the Lunarians are:
"Proud as Lucifer..." (p. 94)
This is yet another Biblical reference and means that the Lunarians are also like the Exaltationists.
Nicol's reference to Lucifer is:
"...out of books that few today knew." (ibid.)
Poul Anderson invites us to imagine a future civilization so different from ours that such references are all but forgotten: Lucifer, Judas, Pilate, Job, Jonah, Solomon, Midas...
Nicol remembers and is profoundly unhappy.

And I strongly suspect the cybercosm wants mankind to forget about books like the Bible! They would raise too many questions that the cybercosm would find awkward. Idle, pampered hedonists is the goal planned by the AIs for mankind.
